Spring is the perfect time to get out and explore. And that means you and the family will probably be hitting the road at some point. Whether your children are in a car seat or you know someone who has children in car seats, this week’s blog is a guide to ensuring you don’t make some common mistakes. We’re all about furthering the safety of your children when inside your vehicle. So, take a look at our guide below and stop in to see us if you’re ready to upgrade your ride. If you have any questions, be sure to read your vehicle’s manual or the car seat manual.

Installing the seat improperly.

The first step to properly installing a car seat is making sure that the seat will properly fit in your vehicle. Be sure to use anchors/ LATCH system/ seat belts to properly secure the seat and always choose a rear-facing seat until your doctor has recommended you to switch. Next, check to make sure the seat is securely fastened and go the extra step to have your seat checked at an inspection site.

Incorrect use of harness and straps.

The harness in your child’s seat could be in the correct position which could cause issues. The harness should always be kept at your child’s armpits. And the straps should not be too loose or too tight. Conduct a “pinch test”, if you can pinch the straps between your fingers, the straps are too loose and need to be tightened.

Dressing your child in bulky clothing

While the weather may be warming up, there are still some mornings or nights where the weather can be a bit chilly. And while your first instinct is to put on a bulky coat or sweater, don’t. This will cause you to loosen the straps of the car seat and in the event of a collision, your child’s seat will be too loose to provide effective protection. Keep your child in a warm sweater and place a jacket on top after they have been strapped into their seat.

Swapping to a booster seat too soon.

While some booster seats can be used for children as young as three years old, this is not the exact age bracket they are intended for. If your child is between four and five years of age, at least 40 pounds, and have the ability to keep the seat belt strap properly positioned across the chest for the entire ride – then it is time to switch into a booster seat. But always consult your doctor before making the switch.

You do it, I do it, we all do it. Leaving your vehicle on empty or darn near close to it is creating damage for you and your wallet in the long run. Don’t think that’s true? Well, this week we are going to straight up tell you exactly what you are doing to your vehicle if you choose to run low on fuel. Check that out below and be sure to stop in to see our team if we can be of assistance or you’re ready to upgrade to your next new vehicle!
You’re Wearing Out The Pump:

The gas you pump into your vehicle acts as a coolant for the electric fuel-pump motor and when you run low on fuel, this allows your fuel-pump to suck in air. What’s that mean? That means your fuel pump is running hot and can cause your fuel pump to wear out prematurely and eventually fail on you. This problem will happen over time but will be a costly repair or replacement.
Fuel Gauges Aren’t Always Accurate:

Just because your fuel gauge says you have 30 miles to empty, don’t take the chance. Fuel gauges are known to not be 100% accurate and the precision of your gauge relies on various factors including your vehicle’s fuel economy and your driving style. Consider this as an estimate and not an exact mileage to empty. In short, running on empty puts you at risk of getting stranded or being in an accident when your vehicle suddenly stops in the roadway. So, just fill up the tank.
Sediment Implications Are Brutal:

When you fill up the tank, sediments in the gasoline tend to settle toward the bottom of the tank. If you let your fuel levels run low, dirt and other sediments get stirred up from the bottom of the tank. Then, as your fuel pump is trying to pump gas into your engine, it’s sucking up the dirtiest gasoline in the tank filled with all those sediments. This mixture of dirty gasoline can end up in the engine or fuel line and will be a costly repair. If you engine clogs, your entire fuel line system will have to be flushed which again can be very costly.

If you haven’t noticed or heard, it’s National Car Care Month! Hip – hip – hoorah! That means it’s time to get your butt in gear and get to showing your vehicle the TLC that it truly deserves. Seriously, living in Upstate New York means that our vehicle is subject to plenty of cold temperatures, salted roads, and other damaging conditions. With that being said, it’s very important to take care of your vehicle when the sun starts to shine again and this week, we have your guide to taking care of your vehicle! Check it out below and stop in to see us if we’re the answer to all of your service needs!

  1. Check any and all fluids that are in your vehicle. If they seem low, fill them up. If they look dirty, change them out. Engine oil, power steering, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid – check them all!
  2. Have your battery checked by a professional to ensure that it is still in proper working condition.
  3. You should check your brake system at the end of each season to be sure they are working properly. In addition, have your rotors, brake linings, and drums inspected at every oil change.
  4. Take a look at your hoses and belts – check for cracking, brittle, loose, or signs of excessive wear.
  5. How are your tires looking? Make sure they are at proper PSI levels and make sure your tread isn’t unevenly worn.
  6. Inspect your exhaust system, you’re looking for any leakage or damage. A key indication of this is unusual noise.
  7. Give your HVAC system a go. If your noticing issues or unbearable smells, stop in to see our team and we’ll be more than happy to take a look for you.
  8. Got lighting? Take a few minutes to check all of your lightings in your vehicle. Headlights. Brake lights. Interior lighting. It’s important to be able to see and be seen – make sure these are in proper working condition at all times.
  9. Windshield wipers are a must. If you haven’t replaced your wipers in the last six months, it’s time to swap them out for a fresh new pair.
  10. Lastly, it’s a great idea to schedule a tune-up to improve your fuel efficiency for all of those spring/ summer road trips you’re planning!
