Destination Kia’s Pet Safety Travel Tips Always use a crate to keep them safe: Whenever you are traveling in your vehicle your pooch should always be secure inside his/ her crate or secured by a proper seatbelt for dogs in the backseat. This is the safest place for them in the event of an accident. If you choose the crate option, make sure you make it comfortable for them by adding a blanket, a toy they love, and any other items your doggo likes. This will help keep your pet entertained and relaxed throughout the duration of the trip. Food, water, treats, medications: A consistent diet is very important for pets, especially if your pet has a sensitive stomach. Always pack enough food and treats to keep your pooch full and happy. Go the extra mile, if they require specific water or are not used to drinking water other than what you give at home, pack that as well. Don’t forget any medications that your dog might need along the way! Vet visits are key: Is your pet safe and healthy enough to travel? A quick visit to your vet can answer any/ all questions that you may have when it comes to traveling with your pet. This is especially important if your pet is on the older side. Getting your vets approval to travel is important! Take a potty break: Everyone could use a minute to stop, stretch our legs, and maybe use the bathroom. Treat your pooch to that same courtesy as you do yourself. This will also allow your dog to keep calm throughout the ride and they won’t be so anxious being cooped up in a crate the entire trip. Let your pooch burn off that excess energy and hopefully, they will take a little snooze when you hit the road again! Don’t leave your pooch: This one is bolded for obvious reasons - do not leave your dog in the vehicle!!! This is putting your pet at risk and quite frankly, it’s not worth it. Unless your vehicle is parked in a secure, cool, covered parking garage - don’t leave them.

It’s important to drive smoothly and make no jerky movements that can cause an accident slip on the road. A good life hack is to pretend you’re driving with a hot cup of coffee in your lap and you don’t want to spill it. Look Ahead & Look Here When roads get more slippery, you should be looking farther down the road and anticipate what to do next. If there are turns, slow way down. When roads are wet, allow double the stopping distance and triple with snow, and even more with ice. Use extra caution and concentration. If you feel your vehicle beginning to slide, always look where you want your vehicle to go, not where it’s heading at the current moment. Deal With Skids When skids happen, it’s important not to panic, stay calm, and don’t stab on the brakes. For a front-wheel skid, ease off the gas, in a moment or two, the wheels should regain traction. Then aim where you want to go as your traction returns. For rear skids, quickly turn the steering wheel in the same direction the rear is sliding. Ease off the gas and brakes. Steer back in the original direction when you regain traction. Constantly Assess Traction During a snowy/ icy drive, it’s important to continuously assess your traction situation. If your vehicle is equipped with ABS systems, traction-control systems or stability-control systems, your vehicle is more likely to have a successful trip. But don’t rely strictly on these systems. It’s important to stay vigilant and cautious when on the road.

Recognize your rising anger The most noticeable sign of road rage is often a physical gesture that emerges after an act has taken place. This is often your tone of voice, language, gestures, or muscle tension. By recognizing your rising anger before it worsens, will prevent you from becoming more aggressive and retaliating. Take time to calm down If you feel yourself feeling angry or thinking about retaliating, pull over and take some time to calm down. Pull onto the shoulder, when it is safe to do so, and recollect your thoughts. Even take a few deep breaths before returning to the road to ensure that your head is clear and you’re ready to hit the road once more. Drive defensively If you come across an aggravated or aggressive driver, it’s best to let that person pass and be on their way away from you. Be sure to keep your distance and be alert of any sudden changes that may occur in front of you so you can react accordingly. Don’t take your eyes off the road, tailgate or block traffic. Resist retaliation If someone is driving slow or cuts you off, you may want to honk your horn, scream, or use profane gestures. Be mindful of road conditions: Motorcycles are more sensitive to road conditions such as potholes, gravel, or wet pavement, so be mindful of these conditions and adjust your driving accordingly. Give motorcyclists room: Motorcycles need room to maneuver, so give them plenty of space when passing, changing lanes, or turning. Avoid distractions: Distracted driving is dangerous for all road users, including motorcyclists. Avoid texting, eating, or anything else that takes your attention away from the road.
