Got Mud? Here’s How To Get Unstuck!
Living in Upstate NY can be a bit of a pain in the butt. Especially when those temperatures start to change drastically or without a warning. One of the worst weather conditions we face here in Upstate has to be the rain. You’re probably wondering why I am hating on the rain. And, well I am not but rain makes mud and mud gets you stuck. Who wants that? No one, that’s who. But in these crazy ever-changing weather conditions, sometimes our vehicles do end up getting stuck in the mud. This week, we are here to tell you to relax, take a deep breath, and let us share with you our top tricks to getting your vehicle unstuck from this muddy situation. So, keep calm and read on!
- If you feel your vehicle beginning to sink or get stuck – don’t stop. Continue a constant pressure on the gas pedal. Hopefully, this will be the only thing you need to do to get out of the mud. You’ll want to avoid bringing your vehicle to a complete stop, your vehicle will be stuck and you’ll have to take other extensive measures to get out. Sorry, Charlie!
- Rock it back and forth – literally. Once you’re stuck, you’re stuck and it’s time to do some maneuvering. While gently pressing on your gas pedal, shift between drive and reverse. This will begin to create a rocking motion and may free your vehicle. If you’re not free after a few times, move on.
- Adding traction increases your chances of getting unstuck greatly. Whether you are willing to use your floor mats, blankets, extra clothing you have in your vehicle or random items like leaves, sticks or rocks – traction is the reason you’re stuck and you need to regain that traction to get out of the mud. Place your items in front of your tires and slowly accelerate. If you have a few passengers, asking them to push might be a good idea!
- Dig it out! If you keep a small shovel in your vehicle, you’re a genius. If not, you’re probably part of the majority. Regardless, you want to try to dig out the mud from around your tires and try to create a clean, clear path back to solid ground. Once your path is clear, hop in and gently accelerate. If this doesn’t seem to work, it might be time to phone a friend!
If you’ve passed through these tricks and your vehicle is still stuck, it is most definitely time to call for assistance whether it is a friend with a pickup truck or a towing service. If you have roadside assistance, give them a call and let them do the work for you. Either way, it’s important to be safe and seek help when you need it most or when you’re losing sunlight. Be smart & stay safe out there friends!
Check Your Tire’s PSI: A Guide
Fall is here and that means a lot of things are changing like the pressure in your tires. Proper tire maintenance is important for many reasons but the number one reason is to keep you safe on the road. Tire maintenance is usually forgotten about but you should be checking your tire’s pressure frequently and more often when temperatures begin to drop. This week we are going in-depth with why you should check, when to check, and how. Let’s get started!
Why is it important:
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says that under-inflated tires have a higher risk of damage and failure on the roadway. Not only will they wear out at a faster pace, but faster deterioration can increase the chances of tire blowouts, collisions, and reduced control. Gas mileage will also decrease by .2% for every one PSI (pound per square inch) that your tire pressure drops below the recommended level. You could even save up to 3% in gas mileage by keeping your tires properly inflated, depending on your driving habits and vehicle, of course.
When to check:
Even a set of brand new tires can lose air, factors that affect tire pressure include:
- Extreme temperatures; hot and cold.
- Driving long distances.
- Towing or carrying added weight inside your vehicle.
Many tire and vehicle manufacturers recommend checking your tire’s pressure at least once a month, as daily use can cause your tires to lose multiple pounds of pressure. Whether the temperatures are increasing or decreasing, it’s important to check because tires react quickly to temperature changes and can lose pressure without you notice it happening. In addition, leaky valve systems, low leaking punctures, and other hidden damage can decrease air pressure yet another reason to check your tires.
How to check:
Checking your tire’s air pressure is easy, whether you choose to do it at home or at the gas station, it should only take a few minutes. Always check when your tires are cold or before you head out for a day full of driving; this will give you the most accurate reading. If you don’t own a tire pressure gauge, buy one. And, a good one at that. Here’s how to check your tire’s pressure:
- Remove the end caps on your tires’ air valves
- Place the tire pressure gauge into the valve stem and press down to get a reading
- Check the reading and compare to the recommended PSI for your vehicle and tires.
- If the reading is above the recommended PSI, press on the valve to let some air out. If the PSI reading is below, fill your tire with air until you reach the correct level.

Car Battery Dead: Here’s How To Jump It
Temperatures are dropping here in upstate New York and that means your car battery might be on its last leg. Whether you know it or not, your vehicle could leave you stranded and if you’re unsure what to do when your car battery dies, you will be in quite the predicament. Don’t worry though, we have you covered. This week, we have your guide on how to jump your vehicle in a few easy steps. Let’s get into it!
Take out your jumper cables
It’s a good idea to own your own set of jumper cables and store them in your car. If you don’t have jumper cables, call a friend or look for a good Samaritan who is will to assist you.
Place both vehicles in park or neutral and shut off the ignition
Both vehicles should be in park/ neutral, engines turned off, and both parking brakes should be engaged as well.
Attach one of the red clips to the positive terminal of your battery
Attach the other red clip to the positive terminal on the other vehicle.
Attach one of the black clips to the negative terminal on the battery of the other vehicle.
Attach the last black clip to an unpainted metal surface on your vehicle that is not near the battery.
Using a metal strut that holds the bonnet open is perfect for this.
Try to start your vehicle
If your vehicle will not start, make sure that all cables are properly connected to the right terminals and have the person helping you, run their engine for about five minutes. After a few minutes, try starting your vehicle once again. If your vehicle still will not start, your battery might be beyond help and you’ll need to replace immediately.
If you’re unsure how much life your battery has left, stop in to see us for a test and let our technicians take care of your battery! For comments or questions, give our service department a call. We are happy to assist you in any way we can!
